Spanish is offered by grade level for 5, 6 ,7 ,8 grades. In each course, students will develop the core language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through the modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). Each course integrates culture as well as meeting the 5 language standards.
Spanish 5th grade
The goal of this course is to introduce vocabulary with cultural understanding. The main focus is for students to practice pronunciation through learning new words and making connections to vocab from which they have prior knowledge. Examples of vocabulary include names, colors, months, days, numbers, and emotions. Vocab will be integrated into cultural units on topics such as holidays and traditions related to pre-Columbian civilizations. Students will be graded on participation and oral expression. Students will be expected to pronounce words correctly, specifically when introducing themselves and expressing feeling, in addition to describing how traditions are celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish 6th grade
This course builds upon previous knowledge in 5th grade. The goal is for students to develop a strong vocabulary and simple sentence structure to express cultural meaning. The main focus is to perfect pronunciation learned in 5th grade and build a foundation for a workable vocabulary to form complete sentences. Examples of topics include classroom and school related issues, commands, and food and sports in Spanish speaking countries. Students will be graded based on homework completion and participation. Students will be expected to describe their daily schedule, identify classroom objects, and make cultural connections through food and sports. At the end of this course, students will be at novice low proficiency in written and oral expression.
Spanish 7th grade
This course builds upon previous knowledge in 6th grade. The goal is for students to use their prior knowledge and develop a basic understanding of grammar. This main focus is to introduce grammar to improve speaking and listening skills. This course transitions from instruction in English to instruction in Spanish with more time in the target language. Examples of topics include sentence structure (adjectives, nouns, articles, subject pronouns) and conjugating verbs in the present tense. Students will be graded on quizzes, homework, participation, and oral conversation. Students will be expected to tell activities, describe them in detail, create and understand peer conversations. At the end of this course, students will be at novice mid proficiency in interpersonal and interpretive communication.
Spanish 8th grade
This course builds upon previous knowledge in 7th grade. The goal is for students to continue development of grammar understanding on advanced topics. The main focus is to develop all four language skills (focus on writing and reading) while integrating cultural influence. Examples of topics include advanced vocabulary, perfecting grammar, and asking and answering thought provoking questions. Activities in this class include journal entry writing, class discussion, cooperative learning strategies, reading a novella, creating presentations, and listening to conversational podcast. Student assignments will be graded on proficiency based by rubric. Students will be expected to have advanced grammar understanding, have spontaneous conversations with peers, and read for cultural analysis. At the end of this course, students will be at novice high proficiency and expected to have knowledge comparable to high school Spanish level I.
