At Cardinal Pacelli, we are committed to ensuring that every student achieves their fullest potential and is supported in their academic and personal growth. This policy is designed to provide clear guidelines for retention, ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed. It reflects our dedication to fostering an environment where each child can build the necessary skills and confidence to thrive in the next phase of their education. By implementing this policy, we aim to make informed, thoughtful decisions that prioritize the best interests of our students and support their long-term success.

There are two factors when considering retention for a student.

  1. Developmental readiness: A child’s physical, emotional, and social maturity, which is essential for navigating the challenges at each grade. This includes factors such as the ability to manage school routines, interact positively with peers, and cope with the demands of learning.
  2. Academic readiness: The student has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the next grade. This includes meeting grade-level expectations in areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics, and demonstrating the ability to apply these skills in more complex contexts.

If a student meets both of these readiness factors per the school staff, the student must be promoted to the next grade.  If a student does not meet all three of these factors, the school staff will discuss the decision to retain the student with careful consideration of their overall development and future success.

If the school staff recommends promotion for a student and the family still wishes to retain the student, the student will need to repeat the grade at a different institution. The student is welcome to return to Cardinal Pacelli after repeating that grade at another institution.  (Following the priorities for admission)
